What Is Shiplap—and Is It Still in Style?

Trends are cyclical, and the latest interior design style to re-enter the conversation is shiplap… with a 2024 spin! In case you’re unfamiliar with it, shiplap is characterized by wood-like vertical or horizontal paneling. The classic design became popular in 2015 (thank you, Chip and Joanna Gaines!) and was traditionally used in modern farmhouse-style homes or beach houses, offering a rustic vibe.

Shiplap, a design element that has stood the test of time, continues to grace homes of every style with its clean, classic look. Its versatility has expanded, with designers experimenting with panel size and color to suit various aesthetics. Rather than an emerging trend, shiplap is a timeless style that effortlessly integrates into any home, adding a layer of texture that naturally captivates. And it’s not just about aesthetics, it’s also incredibly durable!

Like any wall covering, shiplap offers a world of possibilities. You can use it as much or as little as you like, from covering an entire room to creating an accent wall, a cozy corner, or even a ceiling. If you’re unsure about the trend, a great way to dip your toes in is to start with an accent wall or half-wall covering in a color that matches the rest of your wall. A warm white or subtle gray paint is a safe choice that adds intrigue without overpowering the room.

Using shiplap as a design accent doesn’t have to be confined to rustic or farmhouse styles. It’s all about how you use it and the design elements you pair it with. Introduce modern touches like artwork or lighting. Don’t be afraid to experiment with bold colors that you wouldn’t typically associate with the farmhouse style, such as deep purple, dark green, or even black. The key is to let your creativity guide you!

We’ve found several fresh ways to incorporate shiplap in our custom homes. Take a look at some examples below…

Georgetown Gem - Revolution Homes

A shiplap accent wall in a bold color is the perfect way to experiment with this trend!

Nestled in North Hills - Revolution Homes

This shiplap-esque design is undoubtedly the focal point in the room. It adds color and a touch of nature with its sage-green hue, which makes it the perfect backdrop for some plant life.

Five Points Sunrise Sanctuary - Revolution Homes

Incorporating shiplap into a small corner—like in the mudroom—is subtle enough to try out the trend without overcommitting while adding texture to the space.

Village District Dream - Revolution Homes

Shiplap around the fireplace is always a touch! Be sure to use a subtle paint color so it doesn’t appear too kitschy.

The Ridgewood Residence - Revolution Homes

Another way to ease into the trend is by incorporating shiplap into a half-wall. Stay neutral with white or tan, or go bold with a darker green or blue.
